Individuals in the Grass Dance. Fort Belknap Reservation. Mont. July 1906.

Stereograph of KU85652

The Grass Dance was usually performed by strong young men who were asked by elders to dance in a specific area where a gathering was to be held. Their energetic and constant dancing served to trample the grasses flat, and to assist in firming the area so a pow-wow or ceremonial dance could be held.
