The area outside the church also was most pleasant; it was surrounded by a square, enclosed by a spendid bronze grille, and on the corners were bronze busts of the great figures of the war against Napoleon.
In addition, the whole square was lit by electric lamps.Architecturally speaking, the church was in what came to be called the "Russo-Byzantine" style.
This style was a sort of reaction against Classicism; in spite of some serious defects from a purely artistic point of view (such as a mechanical combination of heterogenous elements in one building), it was an honest attempt to create a national style in church architecture.
The cathedral was built for the money collected by the people all over Russia. The consecration of the church took place during the coronation festivities on May 26, 1883, in the presence of Emperor Alexander III.
