Grass Huts

Fiji

The thatch houses pictured in the scene are built on raised foundations of stone, but the more interesting feature is the berm that seems to run the length of the settlement. The author has encountered similar odd linear features in her archaeological sites in the western Pacific. Often they seem to surround structures or groups of structures, as if to delimit the settlement.
