I caught Picasso looking out on old downtown Reseda: the theater boarded over in battered plywood and the big stores now empty or turned into fly-by-night furniture auctions and indoor swap meets. Who had taken the familiar Picasso image? Lucien Clergue had a similar photograph, but in it Picasso held a cigarette poised in the air like a pen. Eisenstadt? Gjon Mili? Maybe. I eventually decided it was by David Douglas Duncan, who shot all the gritty black and whites at the siege of Khe Sahn and was friends with Picasso. Could be. |
