Revolution and Commerce: The Legacy of Korda's Portrait of Che Guevara has been several years in the making. I am indebted to the help of many people in Cuba, the United States, Mexico, France and England for making it possible.
In particular to the director of UCR/California Museum of Photography, Jonathan Green, who produced this exhibition in collaboration with me for his radical vision and consummate energy and support; David Kunzle for his generosity in sharing so much of his own research and material; Darrel Couturier who represented Alberto D’az Korda during his lifetime, for supporting this project from its initial germination to the present; Diana Diaz, the Korda Estate and Reynaldo Almira for permission to use the image and for helping my research in Cuba; Pedro Meyer for expanding and globalizing these ideas through ZoneZero.com; Martin Parr and Francois Hebel who helped realize the early part of this project and take it to Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles in 2004 with composer Manuel Rocha Iturbide, Mexico; Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City in particular Gustavo Prado and Alejandro Castellenos; Wendy Brown for her lucid typography and design; to all the lenders to the exhibition especially Carol Wells and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Los Angeles; Robert Pledge and Contact Press Images; Magnum Photos; International Institute of Social History (IISH), Amsterdam; Urbanmedium; Gallery 106, Austin; Joan Boorstein, of Showtime, for allowing us to use excerpts from Fidel; Hector Cruz Sandoval for allowing us to use excerpts from KordaVision; and Max Ziff who provided the original Korda print.
