My
companion's awareness, or lack thereof, of being filmed is not
distinguishable on video. The awkwardness and strangeness of dating
supplants the knowledge of being recorded on camera. I often find
myself forgetting I am filming when I am caught up in the experience
of the date.
Also,
because I wear a hidden camera, the men - even if they know about
the project - don't know the location of the lens. This relative
invisibility helps to shift the focus away from being 'on camera.'
Furthermore,
because surveillance is so pervasive in American society, many
of my dates are fairly at ease being videotaped.
