Padraig O'Malley. Biting at the Grave: The Irish Hunger Strikes and the Politics of Despair. (Boston: Beacon Press, 1990). In March 1981, Bobby Sands began a hunger strike that led to his death 66 days later. One by one, nine other Irish Republicans followed him to their deaths as the world watched. O'Malley (senior associate, the John W. McCormack Institute, University of Massachusetts at Boston) portrays the course of the hunger strikes and their meaning for the Irish people.

Elizabeth Shannon. I Am of Ireland: Women of the North Speak Out. (Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 1989). An intimate look at the troubles in Northern Ireland, providing a moving collection of interviews with Irish women. This new edition, expanded and updated, contains follow-up interviews with many of the same Catholic and Protestant women who were featured in the original edition, as well as an analysis of the new women's political movement in Northern Ireland.
