Information: 909 787-5395Main Sponsor: California Council for the Humanities Presented in three components, Ocean View includes a photographic exhibition, supplementary interpretive and historical texts, and a public discussion program. As an exhibition, Ocean View features 168 images from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present, concentrating upon materials from the post-war boom to the present. Representative images from historical and contemporary fine art photography, advertising, television, film and surfing journals and publications, including photography by Laurie Brown, Ron Church, Will Connell, Joe Deal, John Divola, Peter Elliston, Anthony Friedkin and Larry Silver, will be presented in the museum's galleries. In addition to historical images drawn from UCR/CMP's collections, holdings from the California Historical Archives at USC, the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach, the Los Angeles Lifeguard History Project and the Pendleton Coast Natural History Association will also be on view. Ocean View will additionally benefit from the scholarly work of Gloria Lothrop, Ph.D., W. P. Whitsett Professor of History at California State University, Northridge, Arthur C. Verge, Ph.D., professor of history at El Camino College and James A. Caros, executive director of the Pendleton Association, as well as the insight Stephen W. Pezman, editor of The Surfer's Journal and surfing advocates Rich Crew and Jericho Poppler Barow. With her knowledge of the histories of the bathing suit business and California food inventions such as the chili size and the cobb salad, Dr. Lothrop brings added depth to Ocean View's understanding of the cultural logic of Southern California. Similarly, Dr. Verge's work on the history of life guarding in California provides understanding of this vital service beyond its usual romanticized depiction.
