Where Yavno depicts everyday people, young and old, men and women, Larry Silver's Contestants Muscle Beach, 1954 presents 1950s beefcake. The men pose upon a catwalk, muscles flexed, fists clenched, stomachs drawn in. Standing between the first two contestants is a young boy; his relaxed child's body serves as a counterpoint to the hyper-masculinity of the men. Behind the stage is an audience of mostly men and in the far background of the photograph is the ocean. Health and happiness at the beach have taken on a new form. The Watermen's athleticism has been transformed into masculine camp and spectacle.
