In Journey to Mecca: Works by Max Yavno, viewers may travel through the images from two different countries, cultures and decades from a variety of sites in California and Egypt. The exhibit contains a selection of Yavno's photographs from different areas of California, mainly from the late 1940s and from his trip to Cairo, Egypt in 1979. This exhibition examines relationships between the different subjects of the works, while still displaying Max's characteristic style and composition. For example, the paired images of "Journey to Mecca", from Egypt and "Watts, California," both are mural paintings depicting two different messages. "Watts" consists of a shotgun with spraying bullets while the other displays elegant landmarks, people, and various types of transportation from a flying airplane to a camel ride. The images conveyed in this collection transcend the temporal and spatial differences that separate California from Egypt. This is done through the continuity Yavno establishes by his unique treatment of subject matter, style and composition. The twelve black and white prints in this exhibition were donated to the UCR / California Museum of Photography by collectors Marjorie and Leonard Vernon. |
